IN HIS OWN WORDS

I, Dimitrio Pappa, am a multi-instrumentalist musician that composes, arranges and produces his own music. It’s such a common thing In our times for a musician to do everything, but I can promise you, I have no intention of following the trends, at least to a big extend. I found it always hard when people asked me to define myself, my style, my director, and it took me many years to understand that there was none. To me, music is the directions ,and a muse, where each and every different instrument or style serves a purpose and tries to make  a statement. It’s all about what I wanna convey, and the story I am trying to tell, or the emotion I wanna express at that moment. This is why I don’t want to define my self as a jazz, folk, rock, or pop musician, neither as a pianist, singer, trumpet player or anything else that I can do. 

 

The purpose is served every time I am working on something. It can be anything. From writing a big band chart, to a string or vocal arrangement, to a 70’s ballad or a jazz standard, it is all about about serving the muse at that moment, and I feel extremely grateful to be able to do that.

 

Expending this philosophy a little bit more, as a service to the arts, I am working in dancing and acting as well. I feel that movement involves a lot of engagement with the body and its essential to better performance, and also rhythmic clearance (tap dancing). Communication and getting the message through, are very important skills, that acting helps to bring out a lot. 

 

I feel that it’s extremely important for us, all artists to understand the impact we can have on someone’s life. Writing a song, performing, dancing or acting triggers emotions to the audience, and once someone experiences bringing that engagement to such a big amount of people, it is very hard to stop it. There’s a beauty in performing and creating that haunts me every day.  I do what I love, and as long as I am doing that, I will never have to work again in my life. It’s my privilege to be able to share my view of the world with other people, and take them to a journey where they can explore and be the best vision of themselves.
